Welcome to Simple Expressions Photography!

Thanks for stopping by!  Instead of a separate blog and website, I've now combined both into one handy "blog-site."  How convenient is that?!  Relax and take some time to browse around and then send me an email to schedule your portrait session and get more information.

I look forward to working with you to capture the SIMPLE EXPRESSIONS of your life!

Model Call…

Today made me feel like spring is just around the corner!  It was a beautiful, warm day.  I love it!  So…this means I’m gearing up for the spring portrait season!  Having the winter to think and regroup, my head is full of ideas and I am looking for “models”  for the following portfolio building sessions.  If you are interested, or know or someone who may be interested please contact me asap!

  • “BFF” sessions – I am looking for a group of 3-4 girls or guys for a “friends” session.  Preferably “tweens” or high school.  This would be a great way to celebrate those middle school or high school friendships!  Sessions will be outdoors at a location chosen by the photographer.  Each participant will receive the complimentary group session, a 5×7 individual portrait, and a 5×7 friends portrait.
  •  Newborn sessions -  What could be sweeter than a newborn baby? :)   Baby must be 2 weeks or younger at the time of the session.  Because it is best to photograph newborns in the first 2 weeks of life, sessions will be tentatively scheduled before the baby is due and adjusted as necessary based on baby’s actual birth date.  Session will take place at your home and must be scheduled on a weekday.  Participants will receive a complimentary session plus 2 adorable 3×3 petite baby albums.
  • Hobby sessions – Do you play the guitar?  Are you a dancer?  Are you really into a specific sport?  Do you have a special or unique hobby that could be expressed in photographs?  These sessions will be outdoors and the location will be chosen by the photographer.  Participants will receive a complimentary session and $40 print credit.

Additional details:

  •  Sessions must take place by May 28, 2010
  • Sessions must be within a 30 mile radius of the Stafford/Fredericksburg VA area
  • All participants must sign a model release in order to qualify for the complimentary session
  • Sessions are limited so call today!

And the winners are…

Thank you to all who voted!  For the winners…I will be in touch very soon with your prizes!  :)

Food Friday {Stafford Virginia Photographer}

No recipe this week…just an image.  I won’t bore you with the details but let’s just say that yesterday’s little cooking experiment was a big flop!  (Note to self: rice in the crock pot is not a good idea.)  Dessert was probably the best part of the meal…nice warm cookies!  :)   Have a wonderful weekend!

Reflecting… {Stafford Virginia Photographer}

A month or so ago, I attended a workshop on marketing and defining my style as a photographer.  It was an incredible weekend but also very challenging for me!  I’m not the best with words.  I have a hard time putting feelings into words.  Maybe that’s why I love photographs…you can say so much without saying a word.  Since the workshop, I have been looking back at some of my work and really thinking about my personal style.  I’ve realized that what I love about photographing children is being able to capture those little bits of childhood that we really want to hold on to…their playfulness, curiosity, honesty, innocence.  I strive to capture images that are bright, honest, true, fun, and relaxed.  I want to catch those expressions that make a parent say, “That’s my child!”  I recently received this feedback from a wonderful client:

“You capture the true essence of our boys personality each time with brilliant color and natural expressions. Their smiles, grins, eye crinkles and dimples shine through each time and we see love shining back at us.”

Yes, that’s what it’s all about.  :)

If I made my Top 25 list, I would say that soup would be on it!  I just love it!  I don’t think I would have made it through college without soup (and canned corn.)   LOL!  When I lived at home and my mom and I would go grocery shopping, she would send me down the soup aisle to pick up what I wanted.  A few cans and I was good to go for the week.  I also love to try soup recipes.  Nothing is more comforting than a nice steaming bowl of homemade soup!  A few months back I stumbled upon a recipe for Tomato Soup with Tortellini.  My kids love it!  It calls for canned soup and I’ve been trying to find a nice homemade recipe to substitute for the canned stuff (and that my kids would still eat!)   I think I found it.  Here’s the recipe if you want to give it a try…super creamy and yummy flavor!  Next time I make it though, I think I’ll cut down a little on the flour and add a little more tomato.   Enjoy!

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 c chopped onion
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 c milk (I used canned evaporated milk – one regular and one nonfat)
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 package frozen tortellini (cook according to package directions)
  • parmesan cheese and bacon for garnish (optional)

In a large saucepan, heat butter over medium-low heat.  Add chopped onion; cook, stirring until tender.  Stir flour into cooked onion and butter, stirring until well incorporated.  Gradually stir in milk and add sugar, salt, and pepper.  Continue to heat, stirring, until mixture thickens and boils.  Heat crushed tomatoes in a separate saucepan and then gradually add to the milk mixture, stirring constantly.  Cook tortellini according to the package directions.  Drain and add to tomato soup.  We like to garnish it with a little parmesan cheese and bacon.  Yum!

Fabulous Frames! {Stafford Virginia Photographer}

I have been waiting patiently for Mr. FedEx to show up with some new frame samples I ordered!  They finally arrived and I am SO excited!  You won’t believe the variety of designs and yummy colors to choose from.  :)  I can’t wait to share them during ordering appointments!  BTW – it’s not too early to start thinking about the spring.  If you are interested in a spring session, email or give me a call.   I look forward to helping you fill your walls with wonderful memories framed in fabulous, custom-designed frames!

Food Friday?

I mentioned a few posts back that I was taking a class – The Art of Food Photography.  I think I have found a new obsession!  Lately, I have been spending lots of time browsing food blogs and cooking magazines.  I’ve torn up magazines and started an “inspiration” folder of food images I love.  I’ve spent  hours walking the aisles at places like Pier1, Homegoods, and TJMaxx looking for cool food props.  I have a problem, don’t I?  :)

As I browse the food blogs, I dream of how cool it would be to have my own!  I love to cook and try new recipes.  Most have been successful.  (But don’t ask my hubby about the baked carrots and whole wheat brownies.  Blech!)  Anyway…at this point I don’t have enough to time to dedicate to a whole new blog so…I’m thinking I may start “Food Friday” here!  I suppose I could try to come up with some fancy kind of name but I’m not really the fancy schmancy type so I’ll keep it simple.  :)   Sometimes it may be a recipe.  Sometimes just some cool images from that week.  Who knows…we’ll see where this goes…

So..in honor of Valentine’s Day here my first “Food Friday” post.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend surrounding by the people you love!

Test post…

I needed an image for a test post while I work on my blog.  Here’s more fun we had yesterday with all the snow.  Ever had a real snow-cone? :)
